Forklift work permit

The driver of a forklift must have a permit issued by the employer. The permit must specify which type of forklift the permit applies to. Before issuing the permit, the employer must ensure that the employee has sufficient skills to use the forklift.

Ensuring forklift usage skills

Before issuing the permit, the employer must ensure that the driver has sufficient abilities and skills to use the truck or type of truck in question.

It is possible to acquire the skills required to drive a forklift with the guidance of an experienced operator or by participating in operator training. In general, the assessment of competence requires a practical driving test in addition to testing theoretical information. The qualification can also be obtained, e.g., in connection with certain professional degrees.

Forklift types

The work permit must specify the forklift types to which the permit applies.

Forklift means any motor-driven short-distance transport device on wheels, which is primarily designed for carrying, pushing, pulling, lifting, stacking or shelving loads and where the driver moves with the device either sitting on its seat or standing on a level made for the purpose. The Reacher, designed for such a purpose, is also considered a forklift truck.

The work permit applies to the following forklifts/types of forklifts

The operator of a forklift moving from one workplace to another must have the permit kept along. When using forklift at only one workplace, the permit must be kept at the workplace in other ways (e.g. in a folder).
